High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is the first and only digital interface to combine uncompressed high-definition video, multi-channel audio and intelligent format and command data in a single digital interface. HDMI switching, providing the most advanced method of delivering high quality video signals to a home theater system to enable the reproduction of DVD and satellite TV sources with HD quality. HDMI can also send the digital audio signals from sources such as DVD Audio, CD, Dolby Digital and DTS to provide simple components connections.
Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3 and WMA. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.
Four SCENE buttons make operating the receiver easier than ever. They are initially set to default settings for DVD Viewing, Disc Listening, TV Viewing and Radio Listening. Pressing a SCENE button automatically launches a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button. Other SCENE settings are also available, such as iPod Listening, XM Listening, TV Sports Viewing and Action Game Playing. Browsing and selecting the settings is quickly accomplished by rotating the Input knob and watching the on-screen display. The settings can be selected for one-time use, or they can replace the original default settings. The SCENE names can be changed also.

Fixed problem and am giving the product three stars.
It's pretty good for three hundred bucks. I've had a few problems with the internal settings randomly changing by themselves but have learned to live with it.
If I had to do it over again...I would have spent the extra few bucks on a Denon.

I recently had a Yamaha receiver, but was an old one with no HDMI hook ups nor did it have True HD and DTS HD. After purchasing this receiver without spending a fortune for a new one, this choice could not have been better. i actually expected less, but this receiver is awesome. I am a movie guy and watch movies regularly and the sound is just terrific. I would recommend this product to everyone.

This receiver is everything you want for a reasonable price. Set-up was easy and auto speaker set-up function worked great. The item was delivered earlier than estimated in perfect condition from Amazon. I highly recommend this receiver for all looking for quality at a reasonable price. Yamaha did not skimp on this model.
Great receiver for the price April 3, 2010

Bought this model(RX-V 565) to replace my Yamaha RX-V 465). I dropped my 465 and damaged the front panel area. My Yamaha dealer,after looking at the damage said it would be cheaper and faster just to replace it, I agreed and bought this one.I had issues with my old one and I now know why- update issue and not using the remote to set it up properly.With my new one it is up to date on firmware and I took the time to read the owners manual and use the remote.I found several things to properly set for proper operation, and what a difference from my old receiver! This set has all the inputs and features I was looking for. I did days of review reading and web site shopping before choosing both of my Yamaha receivers. Onykos ran hot,the Denons were expensive for me. I wanted a 5.1 receiver but for the same price this 7.1 unit is great. It does not get warm/hot and looks good too. Both of my past receivers(Sony,s) would go into protect mode,checked the speaker wires and nothing found. Got rid of them and bought the Yamaha,s and am pleased with my purchase's.

This is a fantastic receiver for the price. It has just about every decoder that you could need, and plenty of HDMI inputs (4 of them). Great sound quality on this matched up with my Polk TSi100s and TSI C10 center, as well as the Polk R150 for the surrounds.
The only feature it does not have which it could use is multi-channel audio inputs. You will need to go up to the RX-V665 for that. But, if you are not trying to use an SACD player, you can probably survive on the 4 HDMIs.
I have my Yamaha set up with an HTPC, Sony Blu-Ray, and DirecTV on a 32" 720P tv. I've upgraded the HTPC quite a bit and chose to add a top of the line sound card and decent video card, even though I had HDMI on the motherboard. In order to have the HDMI for video and optical out for audio, I had to use the 2nd HDMI in on my TV, which is not a great option since every other component is hooked up to the Yamaha receiver. There was no option to set different audio inputs to match with HDMI video inputs with the firmware out of the box.
The firmware update on the Yamaha web site allows you to use HDMI4 and AV4 together by changing a few settings (instructions are included in the firmware download).
In order to complete the firmware update, follow the instructions exactly as provided - especially on not using Windows Media to convert the wav to CD. It will not work, you must use other software (plenty of freeware available online).
If you do not need to use different AV and HDMI for the same component, don't bother with the hassle. But if you have a set up like mine, it is well worth the trouble!
